When you upload a confidential document, contract PDF, or sensitive image to a traditional cloud storage provider, the host usually possesses the decryption keys. This means rogue employees, data breaches, or automated scanners could inspect your personal data without your consent.

The privacy risks of typical file hosts

Most mainstream file hosts encrypt data 'at rest', but they hold the master encryption key on their servers. If their infrastructure is subpoenaed, compromised, or indexed, your raw files are readable in plaintext. Zero-knowledge client-side encryption solves this fundamentally.

How AES-256 GCM client encryption works

  • Key generation in browser — your web browser generates a cryptographically secure 256-bit AES key using Web Crypto API before any bytes leave your machine.
  • Local encryption — your file is scrambled locally into ciphertext using authenticated AES-GCM.
  • URL hash fragment keys — the secret decryption key is stored strictly after the '#' symbol in your link. Because browsers never send URL hashes to web servers, the hosting server never sees the key.

Temporary links prevent sensitive files from lingering indefinitely on the web. Setting expiration periods (such as 1 hour, 24 hours, or 7 days) ensures that once the recipient retrieves the document, the encrypted ciphertext is permanently purged.

Share files privately with Toolverse

Toolverse Upload & Share provides instant client-side encrypted file hosting. Upload PDFs, photos, or archives up to 100 MB, select your retention timer, and share the secure link with peace of mind. No registration or credit card needed.

💡 Security note: Because the decryption key exists only in the URL hash fragment, anyone with the link can decrypt the file. Send the link via a private, end-to-end encrypted messaging channel like Signal.
